Using sport as a focal point, the aim of the programme known as Ikamu Leluthu (The Future Belongs To Us), is to introduce sports skills to the townships in South Africa, and build lasting links between the police, local businesses and the community. The partnership is comprised of BA, the Metropolitan Police, Charlton Athletic Football Club, the Foreign Office and the South African Police Service. During its first three years, Ikamu Leluthu trained 75 local football coaches, and more than 7,500 children benefited from the project, based in Alexandra, Johannesburg. For many of these children, access to both sport and the police would not have been possible. From humble beginnings, the success of the scheme has seen its roll-out in townships across Cape Town and, in February 2009, the programme moves on to Durban.
