Touring a city used to be a case of simply grabbing a guidebook and hitting the streets, or maybe jumping on an open-top sightseeing bus. Now ever-more creative options are cropping up around the world.
In Prague you can now see the city from a new angle on a ‘springy stilts’ tour (+420 774 467211, from £28). Wearing 3ft-high ‘powerbocking’ boots, you can bounce in the air above the heads of other tourists as you take in the sights, from Charles Bridge to Old Town Square & and no previous experience is necessary. ‘It’s much easier than it looks and a fun way to experience Prague,’ says tour leader Michaela Rzbárová.
You can forget gondola trips in Venice, too — the latest way to enjoy the city is by kayak. Study palaces on Grand Canal up close and paddle down canals inaccessible to pedestrians on a tour with Venice Kayak (venicekayak.com, from £86 for a day). Your trip can be tailored to suit, and longer voyages, with camping overnight at the Venice Lido, are on offer too.
Visitors to London can keep fit as they sightsee on the capital’s first-ever guided running tours (londonsightseeingruns.com, from £25 an hour). Qualified fitness trainers-cum-guides take runners on carefully planned routes which include landmark buildings and offer historical facts and quirky insights into the capital along the way (And you can see our blog on London sightseeing runs here.)
Over in Berlin, meanwhile, the seven-seater conference bike is a sociable way to tour the city (available from fahrradstation.de). The circular design, with cyclists facing inwards as they pedal and one steering in the middle, means you can chat as you wind your way around the bicycle-friendly city.
