Uber-fitness extrovert David Barton has just opened another location in New York, a sprawling 40,000sq ft, four-storey gym in Astor Place (£27 for a day pass, davidbartongym.com). Expect 4,000sq ft of strength training plus cardio equipment, yoga, group cycling, a boxing room and a Pilates studio. Don’t expect your everyday gym, though – the place is decorated in a Victoriana meets punk style and feels like a club. There are live sets by local DJs three days a week, spinning from inside (yes, inside) a 12ft disco ball.

If you want to make like a baseball star, head to one of 24 Hour Fitness’s Derek Jeter (free trial available online, 24hourfitness.com) branded gyms. The New York Yankees captain has just launched his newest space, which occupies the loft-like top three floors of a former warehouse in SoHo.

Pure Yoga’s new Upper West Side location is a fulsome 20,000sq ft space and has eight studios with bamboo and cork floors and hot-pink yoga mats (£27 for a day pass, quote High Life, when booking, pureyoga.com). SoulCycle offers spinning-only classes (many by candlelight) and has two new locations: one on the Upper East Side and one in Tribeca (£20 per class, soul-cycle.com).

Brooklyn Boulders (£9 for a day pass, brooklynboulders.com, above) offers the biggest climbing walls in New York with 18,000 sq ft of space to hang on to. And on Fridays there’s a DJ.
