The oldest Christmas market in Austria runs until 26 December. It's set at the foot of Hohensalzburg fortress in the charming Cathedral Square, where you can sip mulled wine, listen to traditional choirs and shop for local handicrafts, ornaments and home-baked treats.

4. Winter walks
Take to the hills yourself on a picturesque winter ramble. Head up Mönchsberg or Festungsberg for great views over
