We normally think of monkeys in tropical surroundings, but these Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, live in the Nagano mountains of Japan where temperatures hit well below freezing in winter. Highly sociable in their behaviour, they are the only monkeys to live in such cold temperatures. Their thick furry coats may help to keep them warm but they have found a more entertaining way to keep out the wintry chill. Making the most of the hot springs found in the Shiga Kogen highland region, they can often be seen taking a relaxing dip during the colder months.
