When Soho House founder Nick Jones opened the members-only club on London’s Greek Street in 1995 (sohohouse.com), privileged media types were unaware that they were early adopters of a lifestyle brand that would go global. There are now four clubs in the UK and one in New York.
Rumours abounded that Morton’s in LA, home to the legendary Vanity Fair Oscar parties, was to become a new branch. Instead, Jones moved a sibling enterprise, a new branch of London restaurant Cecconi’s, into the site. It’s designed by Martin Brudnizki along similar plush and Deco-tinged, emerald lines as the London original.
Meanwhile the LA outpost of Soho House is under construction at a 6,000sq ft penthouse site on Sunset Boulevard. Plans are also afoot for a Soho House in Miami and Chicago.
Back in London, this summer sees the opening of hotel rooms at Shoreditch House (shoreditchhouse.com), London’s East End equivalent of Soho House. The Dean Street Town House & Dining Room and Soho House Berlin, meanwhile, will be opening before the year’s end, too. Those without Every House membership (the most coveted card, which allows entry to all of the clubs) should start Twittering for potential proposers and seconders.
