For cocktails, for clubbing, for dinner, look no further than Farringdon - now reinventing itself as a one-stop shop for London's foodies
It's edgier, it's hipper, it's got a road painted in the lift: the Ghost Bar, Farringdon
David Harrison
With a spate of brand-new openings, Farringdon, on Islington’s borders, is adding to its reputation as a favoured destination for discerning drinkers and diners. Sitting alongside Vivek Singh’s Cinnamon Kitchen, the bar Anise (9 Devonshire Square, cinnamon-kitchen.com) serves up a delicious Spiced Martini (a cardamom and cinnamon-infused vodka with cranberry, pineapple and raspberry liqueur).
For dinner, stop by Eastside Inn (40 St John Street, esilondon.com), chef Bjorn van der Horst’s first solo venture. The Michelin-star chef of La Noisette fame offers a market-based menu at this great value bistro. Nearby at the Modern Pantry (47-48 St John’s Square, +44 (0)20 7553 9210, themodernpantry.co.uk/), Anna Hansen has added her wholly unique version of the Sunday roast to the menu. That means your shoulder of lamb is likely to be marinated in cumin, yoghurt and preserved lemon, and served with minted onion relish.
Hipster clubbers will love Ghost (113-117 Farringdon Road, +44 (0)20 7278 2301), an edgier version of its South Kensington sister venue. The cement floor, brick arches and graffiti complement the area’s rootsy vibe.
