New York is practically synonymous with snacking on a hot dog and handcarts sell stacks of them to locals and visitors alike 24 hours a day. But there are a whole host of nuevo hot dog options on offer that make a delicious (and affordable) lunch or dinner.
At the new uptown outpost of hipster restaurant Fatty Crab (fattycrab.com), they serve the Fatty Dog (£8), a house-made sausage that fuses classic Asian ingredients such as ground pork, shrimp and xo sausage in one super-spicy link. It’s served in a potato-bread roll with coriander and crunchy veggies.
DBGB Kitchen and Bar (danielnyc.com), Daniel Boulud’s new downtown eatery, serves a high-end home-made beef sausage, the DBGB dog (£5), simply adorned with mustard, caramelised onions and a delicate flourish of julienne radishes.
At the new Dogmatic (eatdogmatic.com), you choose your dog (£2.80) from beef, lamb, turkey, pork and chicken (or asparagus for veggies), and top with your choice of gourmet sauces including truffle Gruyère, horseradish mustard and chimichurri.
At Willie’s Dawgs in Brooklyn (williesdawgs.com), you can choose from myriad dogs (beef, chicken and turkey, even carrot) and adorn your choice with a dizzying array of toppings. Follow the trend for Vietnamese and order a Pickles Jalan (£3), with sliced jalapeño pepper, pickles and peanut sauce on a beefy dog served in a home-made roll.
