Afternoon tea with all the unctuous trappings? The ultimate, Tea at the Ritz, £37, (+44 (0)20 7493 8181, theritzlondon.com/tea) is served in the Baroque setting of Palm Court. Book four weeks in advance.

For a quirkier take on tradition, try new-wave tea bar Tea Smith in London’s Spitalfields (£11.95, +44 (0)20 7247 1333, teasmith.co.uk), where quality imported leaves are sipped in an ultra-modern setting.

Glenburn Tea Estate in Darjeeling (+91 33 2288 5630, glenburnteaestate.com) serves the crimson orange pekoe (£1.50) that’s made the region famous, with a Himalayan backdrop that makes it an unforgettable experience.

Or, for a steaming cup of char soaked through with British eccentricity, head to the 90-year-old Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms in Harrogate (+44 (0)1423 814070, bettys.co.uk). Taylor’s tea served with Swiss confectionery and Yorkshire warmth costs £16.95.
