Ca Maria Adele, Venice
In a city full of romantic hotels, this little gem (above) is top of the pile. Situated in the untouristy Dorsoduro district, there are just 12 sumptuous rooms (rich red walls and drapes, a huge Murano glass chandelier and cherubs above the bed). There's no restaurant, but breakfast is served wherever you like — in your room, the 1950s-style breakfast room or on the roof terrace. From £275 a night. camariaadele.it

The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra
Book a room with a balcony and don't shut the curtains. Most bedrooms of this palatial hotel face the Taj Mahal, so the first thing you'll see when you wake are the iridescent curves of the world's most famous monument to love. From £480 a night. oberoihotels.com

Loisaba, Kenya
Set in Kenya's Northern Frontier District, this vast private reserve boasts an abundance of game, including lion and wild dog. Get closer to nature with one of the unique star beds perched on a raised platform overlooking a waterhole or river. The Milky Way looks close enough to touch, as do the elephant, zebra and wildebeest at the water below. From £240pp a night. loisaba.com

The Augustine, Prague
A short walk from Charles Bridge, the hotel was once an Augustinian monastery, but despite the wooden floors and plain walls there's nothing of the monk's cell about the rooms — they're big with velvet chaises longues, marble bathrooms and four-poster beds. The three-storey Tower Suite is particularly romantic with spectacular views.
British Airways offers two nights from £505pp, including flights (includes full board for travel in September 2011) ba.com/prague

Hotel das Cataratas, Brazil
This is the only hotel within the National Park, and guests have exclusive access to the famous 2½ mile-wide Iguassu waterfalls once the gates are shut at night. The look is pretty Portuguese colonial, with a pink-and-white exterior, outdoor pool, and simple rooms kitted out with hardwood furniture. From £150 a night. hoteldascataratas.com
