As the credit crunch bites, cash-conscious holidaymakers are searching for family breaks that remind us of simpler times.

Thankfully, the humble caravan is back on the cool radar. There’s a host of new-generation caravan parks such as Sheepcote near Brighton Marina; Baltic Wharf, where caravanners can take a boat to the bars of Bristol city centre; or the newly opened Poolsbrook Country Park in Chesterfield, an eco site with rainwater collection, geothermal water heating and wind turbines. For more details, contact the Caravan Club (caravanclub.co.uk).

Meanwhile in the US, classic Airstream trailers are making a comeback. There are members-only Airstream sites, such as Arizona’s Ponderosa Shadows (ponderosashadowsinc.googlepages.com) and Minnesota Airstream Park (airstreampark.com). Virginia’s Highland Haven Airstream park offers 75 acres of breathtaking terrain in the Blue Ridge Mountains (vahighlandhaven.org). In the Catskill Mountains, upstate New York, the Lazy Meadow Motel’s Airstreams are kitted out with vampy atomic-age furniture and 1950s kitchenettes (lazymeadow.com). Retro couldn’t get any cooler.
