At last, a hotel that reflects Vancouver's cool edge... Fairmont's newest property, The Pacific Rim, opened its doors (months behind schedule) five days before the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics, of which Vancouver was the proud host. However, the wait was well worth it.
As soon as you pass through the impressive frontage you instantly know this hotel was built to wow. Full of modern furnishings and lines, the reception welcomes you in a way that so many ultra-modern hotels don't. Staff are energetic and seem to possess a real passion for working at one of Vancouver's most exciting hotel openings.
We stayed in the Fazioli Suite on the 20th floor. Paolo Fazioli, an Italian creator of pianos, had a passion for scientific knowledge, great craftsmanship, a firm commitment to technology and highly selected materials... all of which is absolutely underlying the feel of this giant suite. Add to this an unrivaled view over Vancouver Harbour and Stanley Park and this suite is definitely in the spectacular bracket.
There's an impressive pool and hot tub overlooking the harbour, flanked by five luxurious cabanas all equipped with individual fireplaces, televisions and lounging furniture — here one could be forgiven for thinking that you were in a luxurious Caribbean beach-side location rather than waterfront Vancouver.
When it comes to eating there is plenty to choose from. For Pan-Asian food there's the Oru, a relaxed restaurant that also serves breakfast and snacks. Meanwhile, The Lobby Lounge is open until midnight and offers noodles, Japanese food and seafood while Giovane is the place for seriously good coffee and cake.
If I had one criticism it would be the location, lying opposite the brand new convention centre and Sage office tower may not be the best place for those who want Vancouver's excellent restaurants and shops on the doorstep. For this, head up into town a few blocks to Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, situated in the heart of the shopping district and surrounded by a variety of restaurants.
But, if you're looking for a waterfront location, jaw-dropping views and a slick, cool vibe, look no further than booking into the hotel everybody wants to experience. Described by Fairmont as 'cosmopolitan by nature', The Pacific Rim marks the future of the Fairmont brand — and if this is anything to go by there are exciting times ahead.
