Quirky brand Ace (acehotel.com) has just opened two new hotels in the US: a desert hideaway in Palm Springs and a funky outpost in New York. The brand was launched in 1999 by Alex Calderwood and has evolved because, he says, they know their clientele and offer a variety of prices. ‘We’ve always been good value and we team that with reflecting the place in which we build.’

Ace Palm Springs reflects the hippy, outdoorsy west-coast aesthetic. You can eat, drink and pretty much live outdoors on the property. Ace New York, meanwhile, offers rooms for everyone, from those prepared to share a bunk bedroom to execs who want a huge loft. Either way, you’ll get cool art on the walls and a turntable with a box of vinyl to play in your room. From £65 per night.

Aloft hotels (starwoodhotels.com) offer loft-like rooms packed with high-tech features at an affordable price. While the brand started out by opening in areas off the beaten track, the formula has become so successful they are now launching in city-centre locations, too. More than 500 new Alofts will open globally in the next five years. Rooms start at £82 per night. Meanwhile, hotel brand Andaz (from Hyatt, andaz.com) has followed its debut in London with a new hotel in West Hollywood. Rooms are sophisticated and modern and start at £132 per night. The next Andaz will open on New York’s Wall Street later this year.
