A trip to Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula wouldn't be complete without visiting the towering ruins of Chichen Itza. The magnificent pre-Columbian metropolis, built by the Mayan civilisation some 2,000 years ago, was the principal ceremonial centre of the area.

Unearthed in the 19th century, it is now arguably one of the most famous archaeological sites in Mexico. The centrepiece of this legacy in stone is the Kukulkan Pyramid, which is believed to be dedicated to the feathered serpent deity Kukulkan. Standing at exactly 24m high, the monument was designed with four staircases, each with 91 steps, and a top platform, totalling 365 to represent the days in a year.
