A welcome addition to the Covent Garden food scene, Kitchen Italia serves affordable Italian food (mains from £6.95) in a relaxed cantina-style room. Reinventing the concept of a lingering Italian meal, this place serves the best from Mamma’s kitchen but fast. Based on the success of restaurants such as Wagamama et al, tables are communal and dishes appear quickly, as and when they are prepared. There are no fixed courses either, but that’s its charm — you pick and choose from a menu and plates simply arrive ad hoc. It’s perfect for pre-theatre bites or as a brilliant stop-off if browsing the nearby boutiques of Seven Dials.

The menu is pasta-heavy and doesn’t disappoint — the artichoke ravioli with peperonata was to die for and, for the ultimate in comfort food, you can choose from chargrilled pizzas, macaroni cheese and spaghetti with meatballs.

The basement dining space is industrial-chic with exposed lights and an open kitchen. Long tables and benches are great for groups or those who enjoy communal eating. There are also cosier booths to choose from, which offer more of a private space. Nice touches such as fresh basil plants and choices of infused oils on each table make it homely and comforting.
