Once upon a time, Leicester Square was all elegant townhouses and manicured gardens. Today, however, the area is better known for its pigeons and fast-food joints. But if chef Fergus Henderson has his way, the area will be chic once more. For Henderson has just opened the St John Hotel, at Leicester Street, near Leicester Square. 'I like the area's oddness,' he says. 'But it needed reviving.' And next February, visitors will be inspired to linger longer when the UK's first W Hotel opens here. Even the square itself is set for a makeover with a 'ribbon' of white granite seating and a Shakespeare memorial.
