I’ve never stopped travelling. My dad used to work for British Rail and we had free travel around Europe so we were always going off somewhere. And I’ve literally travelled all around the world for work.

I’ve just been to Florida for a family holiday. There’s something about America I love — maybe it’s just that it’s all in English and I’m lazy — but it’s well geared up for having a good time, especially for families. My two girls (aged seven and nine) loved it, though we were all a little Mickey Moused out by the end.

Bite cream comes with me everywhere. All insects on planet Earth think I’m much tastier than anyone else — I’d probably even get bitten in Antarctica.

A pair of new socks is always in my briefcase to put on during the flight. There’s nothing like a pair of clean socks to make you feel better.

Books always weigh down my case. I read a lot, history more than fiction, and have two or three on the go at once. I’ve just read The Ascent of Money by Niall Ferguson — a history of finance, very interesting (although I must admit my eyes glazed over at times).

An iPod comes with me of course. It has everything from Led Zeppelin to Coldplay and movie soundtracks — though no banging house!

Think Yourself British by Al Murray the Pub Landlord (£19.99, Hodder & Stoughton) is published this month.
