DJ Christian O'Connell reveals what's in his suitcase

Holidays are designed around my two children these days. As long as there’s plenty to do, a beach nearby and all-day fun, we’re happy. The Isle of Wight was about as far as I got as a child. My first trip on a plane was to Germany, aged 13, on an exchange programme. I had a great time, mainly because my exchange buddy had a very attractive older sister. My favourite place is Taormina in Sicily – it’s where they filmed The Godfather and you feel like you’re in the film.
My iPod is always with me. I can’t bear to be stranded without music or podcasts. Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young or The Beatles are the perfect sun-lounger accompaniments.
A portable DVD player is essential to keep the children quiet. I had to leg it to the airport shop for a new one when I forgot it last time.
Buying a new pad of paper and pen at the airport is a travel ritual of mine. Just in case I suddenly have that ‘big idea’. The more local wine I have, the worse the ideas get though.
I always take too many books. I don’t know why I think I can read four books on a week-long holiday with two small children.
Portable speakers are fantastic. I play the DJ even on holiday. The kids love to have a dance in the evenings.
The Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show is on Absolute Radio (absoluteradio.co.uk), weekdays 6-10am.
