I love a long-haul flight — the longer the better as far as I’m concerned. It’s the only chance I get to turn my mobile off, watch a load of films and catch up on the news by reading a stack of papers and magazines. I’ve travelled the world but I’ve hardly seen any of it. We’ll go somewhere on tour, head straight to the gig venue, then back to the hotel, then it’s on to the next place — there’s no time to relax or get to know a destination. When I do get a break, the family and I head to Mallorca as I like to be somewhere where there’s a bit of history and culture. We’ll rent a little farmhouse in the middle of nowhere and just totally relax. It’s all go at the moment with the tour so I’m really looking forward to my next holiday.
There’s always a big bottle of hairspray in my suitcase. I’ve not got a bouffant or anything, but my hair is so fine I have to cover it in gunk to give it a bit of volume before a show.
Joop aftershave is my favourite scent so I like to have it in my hand baggage. My wife loves it and I get compliments on it from other women, too. People say, ‘Who smells nice?’ and it’s always me.
I’m a total technophobe but I do take my iPod on tour. I’ve stored all my family photos on it. When I’m travelling I’ll have a flick through while listening to anything from Foo Fighters to Frank Sinatra.
Berocca is a travel essential. I take one of these vitamin supplements every day when I’m on the road. It’s so busy, I need all the energy I can get.
I travel with an old-fashioned diary. I can’t do with a BlackBerry and if that makes me antiquated, so be it. It’s all about pens and paper with me.
