Moscow's metro system is really quite beautiful with big chandeliers hanging in some of the stations. It's great for people watching. I saw a man wearing a trilby and silver robe who looked just like Michael Jackson. But I'm useless at picking up the local lingo. I did learn a few phrases in Russian for a gig, which I just about managed to pull off.

There's something comforting about islands. I always feel very free and calm when I'm surrounded by water. Majorca is magical. I first went there when I was four years old and I still love it. My dad's a great nature lover so we'd always be snorkelling and hiking. I have strong memories of walking through pine trees in the sizzling heat.

The rooms at Vigilius Mountain Resort in the South Tyrol are basic but breathtaking. They may be simple but they have beautiful views over the Dolomites. I spent the whole time daydreaming out of the window. But the New Forest is my favourite escape. It has a unique landscape and I walk there a lot. The pictures for our album, Seventh Tree, were shot there.

I played the Sydney Opera House on my last tour and walked around it twice in absolute awe watching the bats flying towards the moon. What a great memory to take home of Australia.

I'm a fussy eater and spend hours researching places to eat on the internet before a trip. In Greece, I drove for ages into the middle of nowhere searching for a restaurant that somebody recommended.

Hiking is about as extreme as it gets for me. I don't understand people who want to bungee jump from a bridge. I did, however, see people galloping on horses without saddles along a beach in Spain and that looked very romantic.

I was once pummelled by an athletic Hungarian woman. I spent three days at a health spa in Budapest where there was nothing to eat and drink except cabbage soup and eggy-smelling water. Did I feel rejuvenated afterwards? No, I felt sorry for myself.

See Goldfrapp on tour across Europe and Australia until October. The new album Head First is out now (goldfrapp.com).
