The little known city of Plovdiv in Bulgaria is one of the oldest in Europe. It sits on the corridor linking Europe to Turkey and the Middle East and has seen its fair share of different occupancies over its seven millennia of history. Of particular delight is the predominantly medieval Old Town set on the central of the three hills on which the town was built. It’s a treasure chest of antique shops, bars and cafés, and some of the houses offer comfortable B&B facilities. But Plovdiv’s best-kept secret is the most sensational Roman amphitheatre, built of marble, on the hillside of the Old Town. Still used regularly for concerts today, it seats more than 5,000 people and is in exceptional condition, with a fabulous backdrop to the modern Plovdiv spread out in the valley below.
