Reader Mariateresa Boffo recommends Biella for designer labels and local specialities
Biella is a little known town in northwest Italy, nestled at the foot of the Alps, just over an hour's drive from Milan or Turin. It is a lovely place, with a cobbled main street lined with shops and cafes, serving the local speciality - a hand made, wafer-thin biscuit filled with chocolate. The town has a beautifully maintained medieval hilltop area (the Piazzo) and is home to the best Italian textile manufacturers - Ermenegildo Zegna, Luciano Barbera and Loro Piana - as well as Fila. Outlets are dotted around the gorgeous countryside. Plus, the brand new €150 million Gli Orsi shopping mall has just opened.
