I have just returned from Syria with my French wife. I am Iraqi and this was the first time we had visited a Middle Eastern country together. We flew to Damascus and visited the beautiful Umayyad Mosque where children play in the courtyard and families relax in the shade. We also visited Palmyre, an ancient city in the middle of an oasis where we were almost alone among temples, theatres and tombs. A truly magical and solemn place.
