I recently flew British Airways to Moscow and returned from Beijing. In between I spent a fascinating six days on the Trans-Mongolian Railway. Our 7,865km trip was broken by stays at Listvyanka on the shores of the beautifully blue Lake Baikal in Siberia and at a remote Ger camp in Mongolia. It was hard to imagine the massive lake (which contains about 20 percent of the world’s freshwater) freezing over during the winter. Holes are then drilled through the ice every 100 metres and pine trees inserted to mark the route of roads across to the far bank, 200 miles away. The Ger camp was in a delightful setting. Our neighbours were nomadic tribesmen tending their yaks, horses, cows, sheep and goats in time-honoured manner. Mongolia is a fabulous destination for those who enjoy the outdoor life. We were lucky enough to watch wrestlers and horse riders prepare for the Naadam Festival which takes place every July.
