Vienna is famous for stately architecture in gothic, baroque and art nouveau styles. But for a complete contrast, visit the Hundertwasserhaus for an eyeful of shocking colour and eclectic design. The apartment building, created by Friedensreich Hundertwasser is a feast for the eyes, with virtually no straight lines anywhere. The exterior is decorated with vibrant bursts of colour, wonky archways, curved balconies and wild mosaics. In keeping with the artist's aversion to straight lines, the floors and stairs are uneven. There is also a garden on the roof and trees randomly growing out of windows. In the Hundertwasser village opposite, you can even visit the Toilet of Modern Art. The small entrance fee is well-worth the bathroom experience in the Hundertwasser style – just watch your step!
