June 2008, Durban, South Africa. I stand huddled among 11,000 other souls in the grey dawn awaiting the start of the Comrades Marathon, the greatest ultra marathon in the world. A 700m ascent from start to finish, enchanting vistas of endless mountains and valleys, thousands of enthusiastic spectators of every creed and colour. We were like a giant worm rippling along. One entity with one goal. Almost 11 hours later, we reached our destination. The sense of achievement was combined with relief and tinged with sadness that the circus was over for another year.
