Some top tips from a Bologna local:

Stay at Hotel delle Drapperie in the medieval via Drapperie, 100m from Piazza Maggiore, just near a nice food market.

For lunch or dinner, go to Scacco Matto in via Broccaindosso (from the towers walk down Strada Maggiore, it's a street on your left). They do splendid creative dishes.

Or, for traditional fare, go to Osteria Bottega in via S Caterina (walk to via Saragozza, pass S Caterina church, on your right).

Take a bus to the hills above Bologna. The countryside is splendid, with old villas and the typical calanques.

For a great haircut, go to Cane in via Schiavonia, a 10-minute walk from the piazza.
