Ah, Topshop, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth of your shoes, dresses, designer collaborations and coffee shop. I love your in-store hair salon; nail bar and walls of denim; accessories and vintage clothing. Yet, unfortunately, by the look of the stream of fashionistas click-clacking their way down London's Strand on their way to this year's fashion week, my love for you is shared by many, many, many others.
When I was younger Topshop was renowned for being absolute piffle (my mother coined the phrase Top-Tat, and refused to buy me anything from my local Cumbrian branch). But over the decades (yes, I am that old) it has turned itself into the go-to for any occasion, whether you need to stock up on basic t-shirts or if you're looking for something a bit more avant garde and want to sample up and coming designers at a fraction of the cost (Christopher Kane is the new kid on the Topshop block).
In 2009 the brand went overseas and spread its union jack lovin' all over New York City. Much the same as on this side of the pond, everyone lusted after it and regular wearers of its clobber now include Mary-Kate Olsen, Gossip Girl's Blake Lively, the cast of Ugly Betty and, of course, our very own hometown girl done good, Alexa Chung.
As the brand spreads its wings and its Unique range continues to show at London Fashion Week to critical acclaim, it's safe to say that Topshop is here to stay. Her heart may be scattered across many different countries and belong to many different women but it doesnt mean I love her any less - after all, where else can you get three pairs of knickers for £9?
