Tulips, and roses, and lilies! Oh, my!
Much like Dorothy when she discovers her new friends in the Wizard of Oz, the sight of Columbia Road’s Sunday morning flower market in the East End, with its rows and rows of blooms and plants, is sure to make you exclaim in wonder.
Walking down Columbia Road is like entering a magically colourful and beautifully scented world, albeit a very heavily populated one. Nonetheless it is still hands down my favourite way to spend a Sunday morning.
Visitors to the city should ignore cries of ‘tourist trap’ and head over there early (it’s open from 8am-2pm) to pick up bunches of the best freshly-cut flowers that London has to offer. If you’re after a bargain, take a wander around the swanky stores that line the street, buy yourself some bread and cheese and a steaming cup of coffee, and wait — stallholders tend to reduce their prices at the end of the day.
Finding it is simple: step off the Tube at Old Street and follow the whiff of begonias. My top tip is to make a day of it and carry on walking to Brick Lane, where you can celebrate your blooming bargains with a fantastic curry.
