It's 50 years since Roald Dahl wrote his much-loved classic James and the Giant Peach. To celebrate, this summer we ran a competition asking children to send us a postcard about their own adventures. The prize? Travelling to New York for a Giant Roald Dahl Day and having your tale illustrated by Quentin Blake.
We received an overwhelming response, with thousands of imaginative postcards whizzing our way. The judges - Michael Rosen, Lauren Child, Quentin Blake and Kerry Smith – were hugely impressed by all the creative entries, but they had to choose one winner.
After much deliberation, they unanimously picked James Dent's postcard about his seaside holiday in Scarborough as the overall winner, describing it as "absolutely brilliant" and "thoroughly entertaining". James will travel to New York for a Giant Roald Dahl Day.
Both James (winner of the 5-8 year category) and the winner of the 9-12 year category, Oliver Freeman, will have their phizz-whizzing postcards illustrated by Quentin Blake. Runners-up in the 5-8 year group were Thomas Heerding, Oscar North and Nadia Akram. Runners-up in the 9-12 year group were Nina Adams, Zoe Dewhurst and Sarah Sandground. The runners-up will each receive Roald Dahl's hardback fiction library plus a year's family pass to the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden.
The winning entries are on the next page.
