Pelion, Greece

The eponymous Pelion peninsula in Greece is the place to escape the heat of the city in July. Both Athenians and locals love this mountainous region, studded with tranquil villages, huge beaches, hidden coves and a laidback atmosphere. It’s much cooler than the searing heat of the ever-popular islands, meaning you can do a bit more with your days, be that hiking the forested trails, exploring the panoramic settlement of Tsagarada or stretching out on the picturesque Fakistra beach. It’s a good spot to see a different side of Greece.

Mallorca, Spain

Mallorca is no hidden gem but, beyond the packed southern resorts, locals know exactly where to find sanctuary in July. Those in the know bypass the crowded hubs and head for the rugged Serra de Tramuntana mountains or the sleepy northeast coast. Base yourself in timeless, stone-walled villages such as Fornalutx or Orient, where the mountain air is cooler and life slows to a crawl. Instead of gridlocked beaches, seek out the quieter, rocky coves near Colònia de Sant Pere or the pine-fringed sands of Cala Torta. This is a side of the island defined by rugged interiors, family-run cellers (historic wine cellars that are now restaurants) and a centuries-old wine scene in Binissalem that offers the perfect escape from the midsummer sun.
