Is this the most stylish hotel on Ibiza?
Italian flair meets 1960s nostalgia at Hotel Mongibello Ibiza, a five-star bolthole on the Balearic east coast
Words: Siobhan Grogan
The style set has long flocked to Ibiza for its beautiful beaches, picturesque towns and balmy Mediterranean temperature. Those in the know stay at Hotel Mongibello Ibiza, a chic five-star sanctuary on the eastern coast, which is every bit as effortlessly glamorous as the boho Balearic island itself. It’s the ideal spot for unwinding in the sunshine or exploring further afield, whether you’re hoping to visit Ibiza’s markets and big-name clubs or tour its hilltop villages and historic sites.

Italy comes to Ibiza
Backed by fragrant pine trees and overlooking a sweep of golden sand, Hotel Mongibello Ibiza couples Italian flair with retro Ibizan charm. The spirit of the Amalfi Coast in the 1960s and 1970s lends the hotel a distinctive pizazz, from the gleaming Alfa Romeo Spider parked outside to the vintage jukebox in the lobby playing classic hits.
Rooms are just as elegant, with décor inspired by different Ibizan personalities renowned for shaping the island through their work or lifestyle. Nautical colours of smart navy, crisp white and deep red give rooms a sophisticated feel, with vintage-inspired details such as old-school phones, geometric tiles and statement velvet headboards adding a touch of fun. All have Marshall Bluetooth speakers, premium toiletries and tip-top indulgences such as in-room coffee, tablets on request, plush bathrobes, 24-hour room service and a nightly turndown. Each also has a furnished balcony for sundowner drinks, while all suites and some doubles have dazzling sea views.
Outside is made for relaxing. The large pool delivers stunning vistas, jaunty striped parasols and loungers and a bar serving up snacks and ice-cold drinks for living la dolce vita. Wander barefoot from there to the sand to take a dip in the sea or enjoy a workout in the state-of-the-art gym, which overlooks landscaped gardens and is fitted with the latest Technogym equipment. Other activities including snorkelling, golf or spa treatments, which can all be arranged locally by the hotel’s helpful staff.

Island exploration
There are day trips galore on the doorstep. The relaxed resort of Es Canar is just two miles north for water sports, boat trips to Formentera and the weekly Hippy Market, stuffed full of bohemian clothing, handmade jewellery and Ibizan souvenirs with a difference. Santa Eulalia is a mile in the other direction and has a marina for prime people-watching, high-end restaurants and a 16th-century hilltop church. For drop-dead gorgeous beaches, pine groves and salt flats, head south to Ses Salines National Park, while laidback Talamanca has soft white sand, tapas bars and a wooden boardwalk for sunny strolls. Further inland, visitors can discover rural whitewashed villages, vineyards, olive groves and forested hiking trails with panoramic sea views.
The Unesco World Heritage Site of Ibiza Old Town is another must-visit, with its hilltop fortress, cobblestone streets and scenic port. Founded by the Phoenicians in the seventh century, it’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe and is now a buzzy hub of seafood restaurants, independent boutiques and upmarket galleries, including the excellent Museum of Contemporary Art.

Dine in style
On Ibiza, the day is just getting started when the sun goes down. Luckily, you don’t need to go far for fun at Hotel Mongibello Ibiza. Start with dinner at Sorella Ristorante, which serves up exquisite Italian flavours and flavour-packed seasonal dishes including boat-fresh seafood, wood-fired pizzas and mouthwatering homemade pasta. There’s a full programme of live music and entertainment to while away the evening afterwards, or discover the hotel’s very own secret bar, Lola’s, if you can find the hidden door. Named after one of the island’s first nightclubs, Lola’s rewinds time to Ibiza’s era-defining club scene of the 1970s, with dimly lit tables, velvet sofas, a killer playlist and expertly shaken cocktails. The best news is that you’re just steps away from your bedroom at the end of the night.
