1) The ‘cable reminder’ hack
What is it? For anyone prone to leaving behind their phone charger cable when they check out of the hotel, travellers recommend hooking something bright or memorable on to it – such as a ribbon or even your car keys.
Tested by: Chris Wood, director, Escape the Past escape room, Edinburgh
The verdict: “I tie a neon ribbon to my cable so it visually clashes with whatever hotel décor I’m surrounded by and it’s impossible to miss when I’m packing everything up. I started doing this after leaving a charger plugged in behind a bedside table in Milan and then losing my replacement in the same week!”

2) The ‘water for free’ hack
What is it? Feeling thirsty at your hotel but the local shops are shut? Travellers suggest trying the hotel gym.
Tested by: Jenna Hope, nutritionist
The verdict: “I love this hack because staying hydrated is so important. Taking a reusable bottle and filling it up regularly can also be a more affordable way to stay hydrated while you’re away.”
3) The ‘mirror selfie’ hack
What is it? Here, travellers photograph each outfit in a mirror before packing so they can scroll outfits like a mini lookbook while travelling.
Tested by: Kirsty Glenne, managing director, Antler
The verdict: “The mirror selfie hack is a lifesaver when it comes to avoiding overpacking and staying prepared for a busy schedule. I recently travelled to Australia for business and, with a fully planned itinerary, I photographed each of my outfits in advance to make sure I packed enough chic, summer-appropriate workwear looks. To stay organised on arrival, I packed each outfit into designated packing cubes.”

4) The ‘mini laundry line’ hack
What is it? Travellers pack a tiny elastic clothesline with hooks and string it across the bathroom for quick, convenient drying on the go.
Tested by: David, British Airways Club member
The verdict: “So simple but very useful. I like to pretend I’m Bear Grylls as I’m rigging it up!”
5) The ‘safer way to save screenshots’ hack
What is it? You may already know the hack of taking screenshots of your passport and hotel booking confirmation – but what happens if your phone gets stolen? Keep them from being accessed by saving the images within a locked iPhone Note, rather than as an image in your camera roll.
Tested by: David Asante, Universal Music R&B singer
The verdict: “Screenshot your passport ID page, the address (or addresses) of the spots you plan to stay in, relevant confirmation numbers and your emergency contacts.”

6) The ‘pre-packed tech’ hack
What is it? Carrying a dedicated travel bag for tech cords and chargers keeps things organised and accessible on the go and once you get to your hotel room.
Tested by: Keith Whittier, writer, Ottawa Life Magazine
The verdict: “My tech items are vital and I don’t want to forget them. When I’m travelling for work, I use a lot of devices and I want to ensure I never run out of power.”
7) The ‘travel snack box’ hack
What is it? Travellers repurpose small craft organisers as mini snack boxes.
Tested by: Danielle, British Airways Club member
The verdict: “This was a great way to keep the kids entertained and fed while we were travelling. They loved the variety and I loved the peace and quiet!”
