Tired of navigating rush hour and wishing you were on island time instead? From charming fishing villages to untouched landscapes, these are the secret island escapes you’ll want to disappear to.

Chora, the main town on Folegandros (Despina Galani)
Folegandros, Greece
Best for: unplugged luxury
Up for a digital detox? Put the screens away and properly switch off on Folegandros, an otherworldly island – with minimal cell reception – in the southern Cyclades. This craggy, underdeveloped rock in the Aegean is the anti-Mykonos – there’s only one road that snakes through (most) of the island, and you’re more likely to see a donkey than a car. If the Greek heat gets a little too much, follow one of cliff paths down to Livadaki Beach, where cool waters and secret caves await.
Where to stay: Tuck yourself away in one of Gundari Resort’s bioclimatic suites and villas, which fade into the rugged cliffs that they’re perched on.
Nearest airport: Santorini National Airport (JTR)

Egadi Islands, Italy
Best for: foodie escapes
While Sicily has become a tourist hotspot in recent years (thanks, The White Lotus) the lesser-known Egadi archipelago off the island’s western coast are still largely undiscovered. Situated between the Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian seas, the three islands that make up Isole Egadi are dotted with quaint fishing villages and secluded coves. Come hungry and be prepared to feast on red prawns and bluefin tuna fresh off Sicilian lampara boats.
Where to stay: Overlooking the old harbour on quiet Marettimo, Egadi’s westernmost island, Hiera is a former fishing cottage-turned-villa with scenic views and a rooftop tub to boot. (You can even collect Avios when you book with The Thinking Traveller.)
Nearest airport: Palermo (PMO)

The harbour at Koločep island, Elaphiti. Opening image: Franciscan monastery on Lopud, another Elaphiti island
Elaphiti Islands
Best for: relaxed coastal walks
If crystal waters, rugged landscapes, and sandy beaches all sound like paradise to you, then you’d best make your way to the Dalmatian Coast, where the idyllic Elaphiti Islands beckon. Just a short distance from vibrant Dubrovnik, these mostly uninhabited isles are a hiking haven – trek through pine forests before stopping at old military forts built to provide protection from marauding pirates. You’ll be greeted by terracotta-roofed houses at the water’s edge, where your steps will be rewarded with a glass of local wine.
Where to stay: With an enviable location overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Villa Dubrovnik is a relaxed retreat with a spa guaranteed to soothe your tired trotters.
Nearest airport: Dubrovnik (DBV)

Makunukhoo Atoll (Moosa Haleem)
Makunudhoo Atoll
Best for: barefoot luxury
While the Maldives doesn’t need much introduction, the Makunudhoo Atoll’s remote location makes it one of the most isolated spots in the country. Away from the resort-heavy atolls near Malé, Makunudhoo encourages visitors to slow down and immerse themselves in true Maldivian culture: join the local fishermen for a day out at sea before winding down in the evening as the skies put on a starlit spectacle.
Where to stay: Leave your worries at the door at Soneva Secret, where your very own Barefoot Butler will tailor the perfect itinerary to your needs.
Nearest airport: Malé (MLE)
